Music to march to

Published: Tue, 04/27/21

Hi ,

My second music video post is a song I became aware of many years ago. Eve of Destruction is the title track of Barry McGuire’s album of the same name. Written by P F Sloan and released in 1965 Eve of Destruction is the quintessential anti war protest song. Simple, memorable, and highly disturbing, especially as sung with such urgency in the growling voice of Barry McGuire.
You might think that a song that is now nearly sixty years old would be a quaint relic of the 1960s like mini skirts or VWs painted with flowers. Yet, somehow this song never gets old, in fact its message seems to get more urgent with each passing year.

When I marched with hundreds of thousands of others on Saturday I found myself remembering this verse:

‘And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'’

Eve of Destruction is as song of anger and frustration, sometimes it feels like the world is sleepwalking into disaster and hardly anyone one will just wake up. When you feel close to giving in to despair, just sing along as loud as you can and know there is still hope for the human race.
