Accepting ones fete (and a short training video)
Published: Tue, 05/31/16
On the 11th of June we have our local fete and I have been asked to provide a Stav demonstration. Of course I am glad to have the opportunity to show the good people of Crewkerne what we can do. But I also have the dilemma of what to include and will anyone understand what we are showing them? I also have the added complication this time of having two ten year olds willing to take part and show off what they can do. Two over excited little boys trying to impress their parents and friends, I mean, what can possibly go wrong?
It will be okay on the day, the next two classes, whether for adults who will provide weapon demonstrations, or the juniors who will do best showing off their basic exercises that they have learned, will be devoted to preparing for the fete. It certainly would be nice to build up the juniors class and Venetia is still trying to get a ladies class started so this could be quite a big opportunity. I also know how little can come out of such an event. Over the past 25 years I have done a lot of demos at various events, at least one a year. Sometimes there is someone there who says that Stav is just what he or she has been looking for and starts training the next week. For the majority of people you might as well be invisible, but that is okay, martial arts in general and certainly Stav in particular are always going to be minority interests. The main thing is to have the chance to reach the person who will respond, if we get one new
student out of doing the fete that will be a satisfactory result.
In the meantime you might like to see a video we recorded last month, it shows me demonstrating the basic striking and kick we use in our CQC* training. I like to think that it is an example of KISS~. I won’t be teaching these specific training techniques this coming weekend, that course will be more weapon based but I do include them in our Wednesday classes and seminars teaching self-defence and CQC skills, more on that tomorrow.
