Sixteen Runes, the Movie

Time for some teflon Stav. If you don't know the term it was
coined a while ago to describe aspects of Stav which don't
involve martial arts, eg no sticks. So 'non-stick' Stav is
Teflon Stav. Okay, it wasn't my idea but it sort of stuck, or
rather stayed around, if you see what I mean.
Anyway, Druid camp is only a few weeks away and I have volunteered
to so some rune reading as well as leading morning Stav sessions
and doing a talk. So I figured it would be a good excuse to stop
going on about martial arts for a while and have a look at what the
runes mean. I will get into what the individual runes might mean
starting Monday, but for today, what do we mean by rune reading?
Put simply it is the process of having a set of runes, picking out
three to represent past, present and future and then interpreting
what they mean for the person who picked them out. Another word
for it is rune counseling and it can be a very effective way of
getting to the heart of what is going on in some one's life at
that moment.
How does it work? Good question and my theory is that the runes
provide an interface between the intuitive and the cognitive mind,
or the conscious and unconscious if you prefer. Our intuitive mind
has vast knowledge and wisdom but not much grasp of language as
such. The cognitive mind uses language to express specific meanings
but has little depth of understanding. Symbols provide an
interface between the two levels of consciousness. So the
intuitive mind can choose a particular rune to express a particular
thought or emotion and the cognitive mind, with the right knowledge
can interpret the meaning. So in rune counseling we allow the
intuitive mind to choose the runes it regards most appropriate.
Then, using language and discussion the significance is teased out
and hopefully some insight becomes clear.
Rune counseling is not something I do that often, the Druid camp
just seems to be the right time and place. If you know the runes
and use them daily, such as by doing the stances then your
intuitive mind will be able to communicate via the runes when it
needs to.
